You can start Readwise’s 30-day free trial without a card, then choose a paid subscription if you want to continue. This guide covers website checkout with a Coinepay virtual card, including how to choose between Readwise Lite and Readwise Full, where to update billing details, and what to check if a payment does not go through.

What you need before subscribing

  • A Readwise account. The website offers email-and-password sign-up or Amazon sign-in. A new account can begin its 30-day trial before choosing a paid plan; Readwise does not offer a permanent free plan after the trial.
  • A Coinepay account with identity verification complete. Register and complete KYC before using Coinepay card services. You can manage your card in the Coinepay app or 24/7 self-service dashboard.
  • Your virtual card details and sufficient available funds. Coinepay provides a card number, expiry date and CVV when it issues a virtual card. Check the funds available to pay the charge shown at Readwise checkout, including any applicable tax.
  • Your real billing information. Use your actual name and billing address. If Readwise requests location or business details to calculate tax, provide accurate information rather than trying to change your apparent region.

If you have not registered with Coinepay, you can create an account first. Card issuance and fund services are provided by licensed partner financial institutions. Some Coinepay services are not available in every jurisdiction.

Choose the right Readwise plan and billing period

Readwise Lite is the lower-priced paid tier and does not include Reader. Readwise Full includes Reader. Decide whether you need Reader before selecting a plan, then compare monthly and annual billing on Readwise’s official pricing page. The website displays an annual rate by default, so select the billing period you actually want before entering payment details.

At the time of writing (October 2026), Readwise’s website listed Lite at $5.59 per month billed annually. It listed Full at $9.99 per month billed annually, with $119.88 charged for 12 months, or $12.99 billed monthly. The monthly figure on an annual plan is not the amount charged each month. Website prices exclude applicable tax by default; Readwise calculates tax after receiving the necessary location and, where relevant, business information. Check Readwise’s official pricing page and the final checkout total before buying, since prices and taxes may change.

Eligible students and academics can ask Readwise support about its 50% academic discount on Lite or Full, with monthly or annual billing. Readwise says this discount is for website purchases, not Apple in-app subscriptions. It also invites discount requests from people in developing countries or countries with depressed currencies. Ask Readwise about eligibility before paying if either applies to you.

How to subscribe on the Readwise website

  1. Create or sign in to your Readwise account. Go to the official Readwise website and use email and password or Amazon sign-in. If you are new, you can start the 30-day trial without entering a card.
  2. Open Readwise’s pricing or subscription flow. Choose Readwise Lite if you do not need Reader, or Readwise Full if you do. Review the features shown for your choice.
  3. Select monthly or yearly billing. Do this before entering card details. Readwise displays the annual rate by default; confirm both the billing interval and the amount that will be charged at checkout.
  4. Get your Coinepay card details. Open the Coinepay app or dashboard, locate your issued virtual card, and check its number, expiry date and CVV. Check that you have enough available funds for the checkout total.
  5. Enter your payment and billing details. On Readwise’s website checkout, enter the Coinepay card details in the card fields and supply your genuine billing address and any requested tax information. Review the plan, billing interval, tax and final charge before confirming.
  6. Complete any authentication request. If checkout asks you to verify the payment, follow the prompt rather than repeatedly resubmitting the form. If verification cannot be completed, use the troubleshooting steps below.
  7. Confirm your subscription. Check the result in your Readwise account and look for the transaction in Coinepay. If the outcome is unclear, check both accounts before making another purchase attempt.

These steps concern Readwise website billing. Readwise also offers subscriptions through Apple in-app purchases and Google Play. Purchases through those stores use their respective payment and subscription-management systems, not the website’s Stripe billing page. If you intend to enter your Coinepay card directly at Readwise checkout, use the website flow.

What to do if your card is declined

A decline does not, by itself, identify the cause. Readwise documents one subscription error, “requires additional user action”, which it says often relates to unsuccessful bank 3-D Secure authentication. The other checks below are general checkout troubleshooting steps, not confirmed explanations for any particular Readwise decline.

Insufficient available funds

Compare your available funds in Coinepay with the total displayed by Readwise. Annual billing may result in a single charge for the year rather than the monthly equivalent shown on the pricing page, and applicable tax may increase the total. If funds are insufficient, add funds using the options available in your Coinepay account and check the updated balance before trying again. For questions about funding options, contact Coinepay support.

Billing address or tax details do not match

Check for typing errors in the name, billing address and other information you entered at checkout. Use your real details, and keep the information on your Readwise account consistent where appropriate. If you already have a website subscription, go to Account Settings → Manage subscription to open Readwise’s Stripe billing page. There, Update information is the option for an address or tax ID; Add payment method is the option for a card.

3-D Secure needs further action

If Readwise displays “requires additional user action,” look for an authentication prompt and complete it using the instructions shown. Readwise says this message often follows failed bank 3-D Secure authentication and advises contacting the bank about the authentication code. If you do not receive a usable prompt or the check fails, contact Coinepay support with the error text and transaction details. Do not share your full card number or CVV in a support message unless you are using an appropriate secure channel and are specifically instructed to do so.

Merchant region or payment checks

If checkout asks for location information or declines a payment after a region-related check, verify that your account and billing details accurately reflect where you live. Check the message Readwise actually shows and contact Readwise support if its requirements are unclear. Readwise’s terms require compliance with local law and include location restrictions for Apple-enabled software. Neither a virtual card nor a different address is a way to bypass a service restriction. If a checkout states a specific card-type or card-issuance requirement, contact Coinepay support to confirm whether your card meets it before you buy.

If you have made several attempts, first check whether Readwise shows an active subscription and whether Coinepay shows a charge. Then send the exact error message, attempt time and relevant account details to the appropriate support team. Avoid sending sensitive card credentials by ordinary email.

Manage renewal, receipts and cancellation

Readwise subscriptions renew monthly or annually according to the billing period you selected. Readwise says it emails annual subscribers a reminder one week before renewal. To review website billing or add a card later, use Account Settings → Manage subscription. Readwise says website subscriptions can be changed or cancelled through Account Preferences or by emailing [email protected]. If your purchase was through Apple or Google Play instead, manage it through the relevant store.

Readwise provides receipts at readwise.io/receipts, and you can enable emailed receipts in Account Settings. Under its terms, payments are final and non-refundable unless Readwise decides otherwise. You can email Readwise to request a refund; its terms say disputed charges must be raised within 60 days unless applicable law allows longer. Before cancelling, check the cancellation information presented in your account for the effect on your access.

FAQ

Do I need a card to start a Readwise trial?

No. New Readwise accounts can start a 30-day free trial without a card. A paid plan is needed to continue after the trial.

Which Readwise plan includes Reader?

Readwise Full includes Reader; Readwise Lite does not.

Why does Readwise show “requires additional user action”?

Readwise says this often relates to failed 3-D Secure authentication. Follow any verification prompt; if it fails, contact Coinepay support with the error text.

Where can I update my card for a Readwise website subscription?

Go to Account Settings → Manage subscription, then use Add payment method on Readwise’s Stripe billing page.
