OpenAI Codex is a developer tool that runs on top of your ChatGPT plan. When you sign in to Codex with your ChatGPT account, it uses that account's subscription and billing system; if you use Codex with an API key instead, usage is billed separately at API rates. This guide covers the common path: subscribing to a ChatGPT plan that includes Codex and paying for it with a Coinepay virtual card.

A Coinepay virtual card gives you an instant card number, expiry date and CVV you can use for software and AI subscriptions. Below you'll find what you need, the sign-up and checkout steps, and a troubleshooting section for the most common reasons a card is declined.

What you need before you start

  • A verified Coinepay account. Register at Coinepay and complete identity verification (KYC) before you try to pay. You can manage everything from the iOS app or Google Play app.
  • A Coinepay virtual card issued and funded. Check your available balance in the app so it covers the first charge.
  • Your real billing details — name, address and country — exactly as they appear on your Coinepay account. OpenAI matches these at checkout.
  • An OpenAI/ChatGPT account in a supported country. Codex availability follows supported ChatGPT countries and plan-specific rollout.

Note that virtual-asset-related services are not available to residents of mainland China, and some services are not available in every jurisdiction.

Which ChatGPT plans include Codex

Codex access depends on your ChatGPT plan. Based on OpenAI's help documentation at the time of writing (October 2026):

  • ChatGPT Free and ChatGPT Go include limited Codex access; neither includes Codex Cloud.
  • ChatGPT Plus, ChatGPT Pro (Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500) and ChatGPT Business (Standard and Premium seats) include broader Codex access.
  • ChatGPT Enterprise uses custom, sales-quoted pricing, with Codex subject to rollout and workspace settings.

Published US prices listed by OpenAI include ChatGPT Go at $8/month, Plus at $20/month, and Pro at $100, $200 and $500/month for Pro 100, 200 and 500. ChatGPT Business Standard seats are $25/user/month monthly or $20/user/month billed annually, and Premium seats $125/user/month monthly or $100/user/month billed annually, with a minimum of two paid seats. These are published USD prices, not your final checkout total — UK, EEA, India and other local prices vary by region. Always confirm the current price on OpenAI's official pricing page before you buy, as plans and prices can change.

Step-by-step: subscribe and pay

  1. Sign in to ChatGPT at chatgpt.com with your OpenAI account.
  2. Open Upgrade Plan (or go to the pricing page) and choose the plan that includes the Codex access you need. For a company, Business sign-up creates a workspace and purchases seats.
  3. On the checkout screen, select payment by credit or debit card.
  4. Open your Coinepay app, find the virtual card you want to use, and copy its card number, expiry date and CVV.
  5. Enter those details into the OpenAI checkout form.
  6. For the billing address, enter the real details registered to your Coinepay card. A mismatch here is a common cause of declines.
  7. If your bank or card prompts a 3-D Secure / SCA step, complete the verification in your Coinepay app when asked.
  8. Confirm the purchase. Once payment succeeds, sign in to your chosen Codex client — the CLI, IDE extension or Codex Cloud where available — using the same ChatGPT account.

After subscribing, your personal payment method and billing history live at ChatGPT → Settings → Billing. Business owners use Workspace settings → Billing. If you subscribed through Apple or Google, that subscription is managed in the respective app store instead.

Buying extra Codex usage credits

Eligible accounts can buy additional Codex usage credits at ChatGPT Settings → Usage or Codex Usage & Billing. Included plan usage is consumed first, then credits. Credit prices and purchase options vary by account and region. Purchased usage credits generally expire after 12 months and are non-refundable except where law, contract or an approved exception applies; paid weekly usage-limit resets are generally non-refundable too. You can pay for these with the same Coinepay virtual card at checkout.

Troubleshooting a declined card

OpenAI's help center documents checkout messages such as "authentication required," "card may be invalid or authentication may be needed," and "3D Secure attempt failed." It lists failed 3DS/SCA verification, bank blocks, insufficient funds, incorrect card or billing details, and unsupported card-issuance regions as possible causes. Work through these checks:

Insufficient balance

Confirm your Coinepay card has enough available balance for the full charge, including any applicable taxes shown at checkout. Top up in the app and retry. Remember that renewals charge automatically, so keep enough balance available for the next cycle.

Billing address or card details mismatch

Re-enter the card number, expiry and CVV carefully, and make sure the billing name and address match the details registered to your Coinepay card exactly. Small differences can trigger a decline.

3-D Secure / authentication failed

If you see an authentication message, the verification step wasn't completed. Make sure you can receive the prompt in your Coinepay app, approve it promptly, and try the payment again.

Merchant region checks

A purchase requires both a supported location and a card issued in a supported region. OpenAI warns that using access or payment methods from unsupported countries can lead to blocking. Always use your real location and real billing details — do not use a VPN or any workaround to bypass regional checks, as this can get your account blocked.

If your card meets OpenAI's requirement for a supported issuing region is something only your card details can confirm. Contact Coinepay support to confirm your card meets this requirement before you buy.

If a payment still fails after these checks, wait a short time and retry, or contact OpenAI Support about the specific error. For anything related to your Coinepay card, balance or verification, reach out to Coinepay support or the Coinepay Telegram.

Managing, cancelling and refunds

To stop future renewals, cancel a personal web subscription at Settings → Billing → Cancel plan, or a Business plan at Workspace settings → Billing → Manage plan. Cancel at least 24 hours before renewal. Ordinary cancellation stops future charges but does not automatically refund past ones.

Subscription payments are generally non-refundable. OpenAI may consider an unused individual purchase requested within seven days, subject to conditions, and notes separate rights for EU, UK, Turkey and South Korea residents. Web and Google Play refund requests go through OpenAI Support; Apple purchases go through Apple.

Tip for teams: with Coinepay you can issue a dedicated virtual card per subscription and set custom spending limits, which makes it easier to track what you spend on Codex and other developer tools from your Coinepay dashboard.

FAQ

Do I need a ChatGPT subscription to use Codex?

Codex runs on top of your ChatGPT plan when you sign in with your ChatGPT account. Free and Go include limited Codex access, while Plus, Pro and Business include broader access. Alternatively, Codex can be used with an API key, which is billed separately at API rates.

Where do I enter my Coinepay card at OpenAI checkout?

Choose a plan under Upgrade Plan or the pricing page, select payment by credit or debit card, then enter the card number, expiry date and CVV from your Coinepay app. Use the real billing address registered to your card.

Why was my card declined at ChatGPT checkout?

Common causes OpenAI lists are failed 3-D Secure verification, bank blocks, insufficient funds, incorrect card or billing details, and unsupported card-issuance regions. Check your balance, re-enter details accurately, complete any authentication prompt, and use your real location.

Does OpenAI accept a Coinepay virtual card for Codex?

OpenAI's web checkout accepts credit and debit cards in supported countries, and a purchase requires a card issued in a supported region. Whether your specific card qualifies can't be assumed—contact Coinepay support to confirm your card meets this requirement before you buy.

How much does a Codex-eligible ChatGPT plan cost?

At the time of writing (October 2026) published US prices include Go at $8/month, Plus at $20/month, and Pro at $100, $200 and $500/month. Local prices vary by region, so check OpenAI's official pricing page for your current checkout amount.
