Memrise is a language-learning app with a free tier and a paid Memrise Pro subscription. If you want to pay for Pro online with a virtual card, this guide walks through what you need, how the web checkout works, and what to do if your card is declined. It uses a Coinepay virtual card as the example payment method.
What you need before you start
Coinepay issues virtual cards with an instant card number, expiry date and CVV, all managed from the 24/7 dashboard and the mobile app. Before you try to subscribe to Memrise, make sure you have the following ready:
- A Coinepay account with identity verification (KYC) completed. You can register here and finish verification first, since card services require it.
- A virtual card created in your Coinepay dashboard, with its number, expiry and CVV visible.
- Enough balance on the card to cover the plan you choose, plus a small buffer for any currency conversion.
- Your real billing details — name and billing address — as they appear on your Coinepay account. Memrise checks billing information, so use your genuine details, not a made-up address.
- A Memrise account (free sign-up) that you can log into on the web.
You can download the Coinepay app from the App Store or Google Play to manage your card on the go.
Memrise Pro plans and prices
Memrise's help page currently names three Pro purchase options: Monthly, Annual and Lifetime. (The terms also mention a Quarterly Plan, but it is not listed among the three offered options and its availability to new buyers is unclear.) Lifetime is a one-off purchase with no renewal; the terms define it as 100 years or until Memrise stops commercially offering the service.
Prices depend on your country and are detected automatically from the signed-in checkout. As public examples observed at the time of writing (October 2026): the UK web checkout showed £18.99/month, £61.99/year and a £75 Lifetime offer (against a crossed-out £249.99); Spanish and German pages listed €21.99 / €69.99 / €254.99. These are public-page observations, may change, and may differ from your actual checkout. Always confirm the price on Memrise's own signed-in purchase page before you pay. Memrise lists 12 supported web currencies; if your local currency is not supported, the price displays in USD, and there is no manual currency switch on the web.
Step-by-step: subscribing on the web
The web checkout is the most straightforward place to use a virtual card, because mobile purchases go through the Apple App Store or Google Play instead.
- Sign in to your Memrise account in a web browser.
- Open the Subscribe option or the premium/upgrade page.
- Choose Monthly, Annual or Lifetime. Check the displayed currency and amount.
- Select card payment. Memrise lists web payment by debit/credit card (Visa, Mastercard and American Express) and PayPal.
- Enter your Coinepay virtual card number, expiry date and CVV.
- Enter the billing name and address exactly as held on your Coinepay account.
- Complete any 3-D Secure confirmation step if prompted, then confirm the purchase.
On iOS you can tap Upgrade on the Home or Learn screen and choose a plan, but that routes through Apple's billing, so for card control the web flow is usually simpler.
Managing billing and receipts
On the web, go to the profile icon → Settings → Account to see your subscription status and renewal. For eligible web purchases, you will see Manage your subscription via our provider Chargebee, where you can update your payment method, billing address and renewal price, and download receipts. Note that this Chargebee management option covers only qualifying web purchases made after November 2021 — Apple and Google purchases do not appear in its billing history.
If your card is declined
Memrise identifies several reasons a card payment can fail: out-of-date billing information, insufficient funds, or a card that does not permit recurring charges (including some prepaid cards). It advises asking your bank or card provider about any card restrictions. Work through these checks:
Insufficient balance
Monthly and annual plans are recurring. Make sure your Coinepay card has enough to cover the full charge, including any conversion if Memrise bills in a currency different from your card. Top up in the Coinepay dashboard and try again.
Billing address mismatch
If the name or address you enter does not match the details on file for your card, the payment can be rejected. Open your Coinepay profile, copy your billing details exactly, and re-enter them at checkout.
3-D Secure / verification
If a secure confirmation step appears, complete it. Check how your Coinepay card handles these confirmations in the app or dashboard so you can approve the charge promptly.
Recurring-charge and card-type restrictions
Because monthly and annual plans auto-renew, a card that does not allow recurring charges may be refused. Memrise specifically notes that some prepaid cards may not work for this. If you are unsure whether your Coinepay card meets Memrise's requirements for a recurring subscription, contact Coinepay support to confirm before you buy. For a one-time charge without renewal, the Lifetime option avoids the recurring-payment requirement entirely.
Region checks
Memrise says a payment method not shown for your country is unavailable there, and it does not publish a confirmed country-by-country list of where Pro can be bought. A currency appearing on its list does not guarantee checkout or a particular card will work in that location. Use your real country and billing details; do not attempt to disguise your location.
PayPal note
If you try PayPal instead, Memrise reports that some users cannot complete payment unless a debit or credit card is linked to their PayPal account.
Renewals, cancellation and refunds
Monthly and annual plans auto-renew unless you turn off renewal at least 24 hours before the current period ends. To stop auto-renewal on the web, use profile icon → Settings → Account; your paid features stay active until the paid period ends. If you bought through Apple or Google, cancel via that store's subscription settings.
On refunds, Memrise's terms describe a 30-day money-back guarantee for initial Quarterly or Annual purchases (not Monthly), plus a 14-day cancellation/refund right for initial Monthly, Quarterly and Annual purchases; renewals are excluded. The help page mentions a 30-day route but notes Monthly refunds are available only within 14 days, and you request through the signed-in refunds page. For App Store purchases, ask Apple directly. Check the current terms before relying on any refund window.
A note on Coinepay
Card issuance and fund services are provided by licensed partner financial institutions, and services related to virtual assets are not available to residents of mainland China; some services are not available in every jurisdiction. Manage your card, balance and transaction history any time from the Coinepay dashboard or app. Learn more at the Coinepay home page, or reach the team through support or Telegram.

FAQ
Which Memrise Pro plans can I pay for with a virtual card?
On the web you can choose Monthly, Annual or Lifetime. Monthly and annual auto-renew; Lifetime is a one-time purchase with no renewal. Prices depend on your country, so confirm the amount and currency on Memrise's signed-in checkout before paying.
Why was my Coinepay card declined at Memrise checkout?
Common causes are insufficient balance, a billing address that doesn't match your card details, an incomplete 3-D Secure step, or a card that doesn't permit recurring charges. Memrise notes some prepaid cards may be refused. Fix the mismatch or top up, and contact Coinepay support if you're unsure your card supports recurring charges.
Should I pay on the Memrise website or in the app?
The web checkout lets you enter your virtual card directly and manage billing through Chargebee. Mobile purchases on iOS or Android go through Apple or Google billing instead, and those don't appear in Memrise's web billing history, so the web flow is usually simpler for card control.
Can I use a one-time payment instead of a recurring subscription?
Yes. The Lifetime option is a single one-off purchase with no renewal, so it avoids the recurring-charge requirement that can cause some cards to be declined. Monthly and annual plans auto-renew unless you disable renewal in Settings at least 24 hours before the period ends.
What currency will Memrise charge my card in?
Memrise detects your currency automatically from the signed-in checkout and supports 12 web currencies. If your local currency isn't supported, the price shows in USD. There's no manual currency switch on the web, so check the displayed amount before confirming and keep a small buffer on your card for conversion.
