Gumroad is an e-commerce platform where creators sell digital downloads, courses, memberships and more. Whether you want to buy a one-time product or subscribe to a creator's membership, you pay at checkout with a card. This guide shows how to use a Coinepay virtual card to pay on Gumroad, where the relevant buyer settings live, and how to work through the most common reasons a card is declined.

Before you start, remember that Gumroad sets product availability and its own payment rules, and each creator sets their own prices and refund policy. Use your real identity and billing details throughout.

What you need before you check out

  • A verified Coinepay account. Register at Coinepay and complete identity verification (KYC) before you can create and use a card. You can manage everything from the dashboard or the Coinepay app for iOS and Android.
  • An active Coinepay virtual card with its card number, expiry date and CVV, which are issued instantly in the app.
  • Enough balance on the card to cover the product price plus any tax, currency conversion or discounts shown at checkout.
  • Your correct billing details, including the billing postcode/ZIP tied to the card, since Gumroad checks this.

Gumroad's buyer guide lists Visa, Visa Electron, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, Maestro and Diners Club, along with most debit cards, PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay. It also notes that prepaid and gift cards are accepted but may be rejected by their issuers. If you are unsure whether your Coinepay card meets a particular requirement, contact Coinepay support to confirm before you buy.

Do you need a Gumroad account?

It depends on what you are buying:

  • One-time products can be purchased without a Gumroad account. You enter your email and receive a receipt and a content link by email.
  • Memberships create an account during the purchase, because you will need somewhere to manage renewals later.

If you plan to sell as well as buy, seller sign-up at gumroad.com offers Google, X, or email and password. Note that Gumroad does not publish a named platform subscription plan; its published charges are transaction fees for sellers, not a monthly membership fee for buyers.

Step by step: paying on Gumroad with your Coinepay card

  1. Create and fund your Coinepay virtual card. Open the Coinepay app, generate a card, and make sure the balance covers the full amount you expect to pay.
  2. Open the product page. Go to the creator's Gumroad profile or the direct product link they shared.
  3. Select the product and any option. For a membership, choose the tier and billing frequency the creator offers (memberships can be billed monthly, quarterly, semi-annually or annually). Creators name and price their own tiers, so there is no single Gumroad-wide membership price.
  4. Enter your email. Use a real address you can access, because your receipt and content link are sent there.
  5. Enter your card details. Type the Coinepay card number, expiry date and CVV, and the billing postcode/ZIP that matches the card.
  6. Confirm the amount. Review the displayed price, which can vary by listing, currency conversion, tax, discounts and any creator-enabled purchasing-power-parity discount.
  7. Complete the purchase. Click Buy for a one-time item or Subscribe for a membership. Approve any 3-D Secure confirmation if your bank or Coinepay prompts for it.
  8. Check your email. Keep the receipt; it links to your download or to the controls for managing a membership.

A note on prices and fees

The percentages Gumroad publishes (for example direct sales and Gumroad Discover rates at the time of writing, October 2026) are charges to sellers, not extra fees you pay as a buyer. What you pay is the product price the creator set plus any tax shown at checkout. Always confirm the final figure on the Gumroad checkout and the creator's own pricing before you click Buy.

Managing or changing the card on a membership

If you subscribed to a membership and want to update payment details, use the buyer controls Gumroad documents:

  • Open Subscription settings / Manage membership from your receipt email or in your Library.
  • Choose Use a different card to switch the membership to a new Coinepay card number.

To stop future renewals, cancel from Manage membership. Access continues through the current paid billing period, and Gumroad's terms state that cancellation does not by itself earn a prorated refund. Gumroad's terms also mention contacting Gumroad via in-app live chat to prevent renewal; whether that is additionally required alongside self-service cancellation is not clear, so if in doubt, cancel in the dashboard and keep a record.

Troubleshooting a declined or failed payment

Gumroad documents several reasons a payment can fail. Work through these before retrying:

SymptomLikely causeWhat to do
Generic declineInsufficient funds on the cardTop up your Coinepay card so the balance covers the price plus tax, then retry.
Wrong CVC or billing ZIP/postal codeMismatched card detailsRe-enter the CVV exactly, and use the billing postcode tied to the Coinepay card.
Issuer block or prepaid-card restrictionThe card issuer rejected the chargePrepaid and gift cards are accepted but may be rejected by their issuers; contact Coinepay support to confirm your card can be used for this purchase.
3-D Secure step did not completeVerification prompt missed or timed outRetry and approve the confirmation in the Coinepay app or your authentication channel.
"Not available in your location"Gumroad or the creator restricts that item by regionThis is not a card decline. Gumroad blocks purchases associated with Cuba, Iran, North Korea and the specified Crimea, Sevastopol, Donetsk and Luhansk regions. Use your real location and billing details; do not attempt to disguise them.
"Previous payment still processing"An earlier attempt is pendingWait before retrying so you are not charged twice.
"Active subscription" on this emailYou already have the membershipCheck the Library with that email instead of buying again.
Browser/proxy/VPN problem or risk checkConnection or Gumroad fraud screeningUse a normal connection without a VPN or proxy, clear the browser issue, and retry; an earlier chargeback can also block a card.

If a charge fails repeatedly after the card details are correct and funded, check the Coinepay app for any authorization or hold, and reach out to Coinepay support or on Telegram to confirm nothing on the card side is blocking the payment.

Refunds and disputes

Sellers set their own refund policies on Gumroad, which can include no-refunds policies. If you have a problem, Gumroad's guidance is to first contact the creator through your receipt; if the creator does not respond for 30 days, you may contact Gumroad with your correspondence. Gumroad also reserves discretion to refund within 90 days to prevent chargebacks. Consumers in Brazil may withdraw from qualifying Gumroad-processed website purchases, including digital products, within seven days of delivery. Purchases made in Gumroad's mobile apps are refunded by Apple or Google instead. Raising a bank-style chargeback through Coinepay should be a last resort, since disputes can affect the creator's account.

Keep your Coinepay card ready for recurring charges

For a membership, make sure the Coinepay card stays active and funded ahead of each renewal date so the subscription is not interrupted. You can monitor the card balance and transactions in the Coinepay app at any time, and update the card on the membership from Manage membership whenever you issue a new one.

FAQ

Can I buy on Gumroad without a Gumroad account?

Yes for one-time products. You enter your email and receive a receipt and content link by email. Memberships, however, create an account during the purchase so you can manage renewals later.

Why was my Coinepay card declined at Gumroad checkout?

Common reasons Gumroad lists are a wrong CVC or billing ZIP/postal code, insufficient funds, an issuer block, prepaid-card restrictions, a VPN or browser problem, a Gumroad risk check, or an earlier chargeback. Confirm your details and balance, then retry, and contact Coinepay support if it keeps failing.

Does Gumroad charge me a subscription fee to buy?

No. Gumroad publishes transaction fees that apply to sellers, not a buyer membership fee. You pay the product price the creator set plus any tax or currency conversion shown at checkout.

How do I change the card on a Gumroad membership?

Open Subscription settings or Manage membership from your receipt email or in your Library, then choose 'Use a different card' and enter your new Coinepay card number, expiry and CVV.

What does 'not available in your location' mean at checkout?

It is not a card decline. Gumroad or the creator restricts that item by region, and Gumroad blocks purchases associated with sanctioned areas such as Cuba, Iran, North Korea and specified regions of Ukraine. Always use your real location and billing details.
