Google AI Studio is a developer tool, not a Google One or Gemini consumer subscription. You can start with its Free access in an eligible region, then set up billing for a project when you need paid Gemini Developer API usage. This guide explains where to add a Coinepay virtual card, what Google may charge, and what to check if the card is declined. Google decides whether a particular payment method is eligible.

Before you add a card

Make sure you meet Google’s access requirements. AI Studio and the Gemini API are available only in Google’s listed countries and territories; users must be at least 18, and Google may require age verification. Check Google’s official availability list before setting up billing. Use your real identity, billing country, contact information, and billing address. The country you select for a Google Cloud Billing account determines its currency and available payment options, and cannot be changed on that existing account.

You also need a Google account and an AI Studio project. If you intend to use Coinepay, register for Coinepay and complete identity verification before using card services. Your virtual card’s number, expiry date, and CVV are available after issuance. Check the Coinepay app or self-service dashboard for the card details and available funds before entering them at Google’s checkout.

Check Google’s card rules first: Google Cloud Billing lists American Express, Mastercard, and Visa among its accepted card networks, subject to country and other eligibility rules. It does not accept prepaid cards, or debit cards that require in-session two-factor authentication for automatic charges. Do not assume that a virtual card qualifies simply because it has a card number. Contact Coinepay support to confirm whether your card meets Google’s applicable requirements before you buy. Google makes the final acceptance decision.

Understand what you are paying for

There is no single fixed-price “Google AI Studio subscription” to check out with. Ordinary AI Studio use is free where available, except that activity through a linked paid API key is charged to that key’s paid project. Google calls its Gemini Developer API pricing categories Free, Paid, and Enterprise; Enterprise customers are directed to sales. Paid API costs depend on the model, processing mode, and usage. Check Google’s official Gemini API pricing page for current rates rather than treating an API billing setup as a monthly subscription purchase.

Google also describes billing-account usage tiers as Free, Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3. These are not subscription plan names. Linking an active billing account is the requirement for Tier 1; higher tiers have additional payment-history requirements. Separately, Prepay and Postpay describe how you pay: Prepay draws down purchased credits, while Postpay charges accrued usage at month-end or when a payment threshold is reached. The options shown during setup depend on your account’s eligibility and Google’s billing rollout.

Set up Google AI Studio billing step by step

  1. Sign in to Google AI Studio. Use the Google account associated with the project you want to bill. If you have not created or selected a project, follow AI Studio’s project prompts first. Keep the project distinct from any other projects whose charges you manage.
  2. Find the billing action. Open API keys or Projects, locate the project, and choose Set up billing. New users begin on Free; this action starts the process of moving the selected project to Paid.
  3. Complete the billing-account details. Google may ask you to select a country, accept terms, and provide contact details. If you already use Google Cloud Billing, you may be able to select an existing billing account or create another one. Choose the correct real billing country carefully because it controls the account’s currency and payment choices.
  4. Review the payment arrangement. Depending on eligibility and rollout, Google may ask for an initial Prepay purchase, offer a choice between Prepay and Postpay, or temporarily assign Postpay. At the time of writing (October 2026), Google lists a $5 minimum Prepay credit purchase; this is an initial credit amount, not a recurring AI Studio subscription price. Check Google’s official billing page and the amount displayed at checkout before proceeding.
  5. Enter your card details if eligible. Copy the Coinepay virtual card number, expiry date, and CVV into Google’s payment form. Enter your real billing name and address consistently with your payment information. Review the account, amount, currency, and any authentication request before confirming. Do not make repeated attempts if Google explicitly says the card type is unsupported.
  6. Check the result. In AI Studio, open Dashboard → Billing to review billing information and transactions. Use Dashboard → Usage to monitor API consumption. If you use Prepay, Dashboard → Billing → Buy credits is the path for later credit purchases.

After setup, keep an eye on which API key your application uses: requests through a linked paid key can incur charges even when you also use AI Studio’s free features. Google’s billing display, rather than a card-entry confirmation alone, is the place to check whether the intended project has paid billing enabled.

Where to manage payment methods and spending

For Prepay, go to AI Studio → Dashboard → Billing to see your balance, transactions, and auto-reload controls. Google places Prepay card management under How you pay → Manage payment methods within that billing area. For Postpay, you can manage a payment method in the Google Cloud console → Cloud Billing → Payment method. Available controls can differ by billing plan, so use the path associated with the plan shown on your account.

Review usage regularly rather than assuming a credit purchase covers all future activity. A declined payment, invalid method, or overdue balance can suspend services even if a Prepay balance remains. If you want to stop paid use on one project and return it to Free, disable billing on that project. Closing a self-serve Cloud Billing account instead stops services across every project linked to it, and accrued charges remain payable. Unused Prepay credits are generally non-refundable, expire 12 months after purchase, and are forfeited if the Prepay billing account is closed; Google documents an exception for an eligible switch to Postpay.

Why was the card declined?

  • Insufficient available funds: Check the available amount in Coinepay against the purchase or charge Google is attempting. If Google presents a Prepay purchase, check the amount on that screen; if it is a Postpay charge, inspect the billing account’s transactions. Add sufficient funds through the options available in Coinepay before retrying, and consider any other pending card activity.
  • Billing details do not match: Recheck the card number, expiry, CVV, billing name, and real billing address. Confirm that the country selected for the Google billing account is the correct one. Do not substitute a different address or country to try to pass Google’s checks.
  • Authentication or automatic-payment restrictions: If Google requests card authentication, follow the legitimate prompt presented during checkout. If it does not complete, ask Coinepay support to help identify the card-side issue. Google does not accept debit cards requiring in-session two-factor authentication for automatic charges; support can help you check whether that rule applies, but cannot override Google’s policy.
  • Card type or region is ineligible: Google does not accept prepaid cards for Cloud Billing, and its supported options vary by country and currency. The message “Your card does not support automatic recurring payments” points to an automatic-payment compatibility issue. Contact Coinepay support to confirm your card’s relevant characteristics, and check Google’s billing-country payment options. If the method does not qualify, use another method Google accepts for your actual location.
  • Issuer decline without detail: Google may display “General decline of the card. No other information was provided by the issuing bank.” Check the billing account’s Transactions page for any bank-supplied reason, then contact Coinepay support with the time, amount, and exact message. Avoid sharing your full card number or CVV in a support message.

If billing setup succeeds but the API still reports a payment problem, verify that the application uses the key and project linked to the intended billing account. Check the project’s billing status, balance or outstanding charges, and transactions before changing cards. A funded Prepay balance alone does not establish that every project or charge is in good standing.

Get help without risking your account

Keep a record of the exact Google error, the project involved, and whether your billing plan is Prepay or Postpay. For a question about a Google billing-account restriction, consult Google’s official billing help; for a question about your Coinepay card or a declined card attempt, contact Coinepay support. Follow both services’ identity and payment checks rather than trying to work around them. You can manage your Coinepay card from its 24/7 self-service dashboard or mobile app.

FAQ

Do I need to subscribe to Google AI Studio to use it?

No. Ordinary AI Studio use is free in eligible regions, but usage through a linked paid API key is charged to that key’s paid project.

Can I add a Coinepay virtual card to Google AI Studio billing?

You can try adding it during billing setup if it meets Google’s requirements. Google Cloud Billing excludes prepaid cards and debit cards requiring in-session two-factor authentication for automatic charges. Ask Coinepay support to confirm your card’s relevant characteristics before buying; Google decides whether to accept it.

Where can I buy more Gemini API Prepay credits?

In Google AI Studio, go to Dashboard → Billing → Buy credits. Review the amount and current terms shown before confirming.

How do I stop paid Gemini API usage for one project?

Disable billing on that project to return it to Free. Closing the entire Cloud Billing account affects all projects linked to it, and accrued charges remain payable.
