Bitwarden Premium adds encrypted file attachments, vault-health alerts, password coaching and extra two-step login options to your password manager. It is billed annually, and checkout runs through Bitwarden's card processor. This guide shows how to use a Coinepay virtual card to pay for it, where to find the billing settings, and how to troubleshoot a declined payment.
What you need before you start
Have these ready so checkout goes smoothly in one pass:
- A Bitwarden account (free is fine to start), with your email verified and a master password set. During account creation you choose a US or EU server region — note that this cannot be changed later.
- A Coinepay virtual card. If you do not have one yet, register with Coinepay, complete identity verification (KYC), and open the iOS app or Android app to view the card number, expiry date and CVV.
- The billing address tied to your Coinepay card details. Bitwarden calculates US sales tax from your ZIP/postal code and, since 2025, assesses VAT separately for personal-use subscriptions in Australia, Canada, the EU and the UK, so the address must be accurate.
- Enough balance on the card to cover the annual charge plus any tax. An upgrade from Free is billed immediately.
Coinepay issues virtual cards you can use for software and online subscriptions like this one. Services related to virtual assets are not available to residents of mainland China, and some services are not available in every jurisdiction.
Bitwarden Premium plans and prices
The Password Manager line includes Free individual, Premium individual, Free organization, Families organization, Teams organization and Enterprise organization. Paid organization plans already include Premium features for their members.
At the time of writing (October 2026), Bitwarden lists Premium individual at US$19.80/year (shown as US$1.65/month, billed annually) and Families at US$47.88/year for up to six users (shown as US$3.99/month, billed annually). Teams is listed at US$4/user/month and Enterprise at US$6/user/month on an annual basis; taxes are excluded from those figures. Prices vary by region and change over time, so confirm the current total on Bitwarden's official pricing page before you pay — several local pricing pages still display US dollars rather than a verified local-currency total.
Step-by-step: subscribe and pay
- Sign in to the Bitwarden web app. Individual billing is managed only in the web app, not in the browser extension or mobile apps.
- To upgrade an existing free account, go to Settings → Go Premium. Bitwarden also offers a sign-up route that creates a new Premium account directly.
- Review the Premium individual plan and its annual price. If tax applies to your billing country, the checkout total will reflect it.
- Choose credit or debit card as the payment method. Bitwarden's card processor is Stripe.
- Enter your Coinepay virtual card number, expiry date and CVV from the Coinepay app, then type the cardholder name and billing address exactly as they appear on your Coinepay account.
- Confirm. An upgrade from Free is charged immediately, and your Premium features unlock once the payment succeeds.
- Check Settings → Billing history for your invoice or receipt.
Bitwarden names Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover for card payments, and also supports linking PayPal for automatic payments. (Paying by cryptocurrency through BitPay means buying account credit before upgrading — a separate flow from entering a card.) Bitwarden has not published a definitive list of countries where Premium checkout succeeds; it says the available methods depend on your plan and billing country and are shown during the upgrade step.
Managing and renewing your subscription
To change your card later, open the web app and go to Settings → Subscription → Payment details. Organization owners manage cards at Admin Console → Billing → Payment details and the plan at Billing → Subscription; individual and organization billing are kept separate.
Premium individual and Families renew annually, and Bitwarden processes most methods automatically on renewal. Keep your Coinepay card active with enough balance before each renewal date. If an automatic payment fails, an unpaid invoice appears in Billing history; for plans without invoiced terms, payment is due within 14 days to avoid disruption. You can update your method or pay the open invoice from there.
For the January 2026 price change, Bitwarden said existing subscribers get 15 days' notice before renewal, and existing Premium subscribers (plus some early 2019 Families subscribers) receive a one-time 25% discount on their next annual renewal.
Troubleshooting a declined card
If your payment does not go through, work through these common causes before retrying.
Insufficient balance
The annual charge is taken in full at upgrade, and tax may be added on top of the listed price. Confirm your Coinepay card holds enough to cover the total shown at checkout, then try again.
Billing address or ZIP mismatch
Card processors check that the billing address and postal code match what the card issuer holds. Enter the exact address and postal code associated with your Coinepay card. A mismatch is a frequent cause of an otherwise unexplained decline, and Bitwarden also uses the ZIP/postal code to calculate tax.
3-D Secure or verification prompt
If a confirmation or one-time passcode step appears, complete it using the verification channel set in your Coinepay app. Abandoning this step cancels the charge.
Browser or extension interference
Bitwarden documents a Firefox checkout error, You passed an empty string for 'payment_method_data[referrer]', and notes that a browser extension or setting can block the submission. It suggests retrying in a Firefox Private Window, or use a different browser with extensions disabled.
Region or card-type checks
Bitwarden's card acceptance varies by billing country, and it has not confirmed acceptance of every prepaid, UnionPay or RuPay card. Past community reports include an India decline citing RBI guidelines (July 2022) and a generic decline on Russian-issued UnionPay cards (February 2023); whether those apply in 2026 is not confirmed. Enter your real billing details — never use a false address or try to bypass a regional or payment check. If you are unsure whether your card meets Bitwarden's requirements, contact Coinepay support to confirm your card details before you buy.
Still stuck?
If the charge keeps failing, check your Coinepay app for a decline reason or notification, and reach out through Coinepay support or Telegram. For account-side issues, Bitwarden's billing support can review your subscription.
Cancellation and refunds
Cancel individual renewal at Settings → Subscription → Cancel subscription, or organization renewal at Admin Console → Billing → Subscription → Cancel subscription. Paid access continues until the end of the current term, and cancelling does not delete your account. Bitwarden's terms describe a 30-day refund policy on paid services via support, while its cancellation guide notes Premium subscriptions older than 30 days are not refund-eligible. Review the current terms on Bitwarden's site for the details that apply to you.

Where do I manage my Bitwarden Premium payment card?
Open the Bitwarden web app and go to Settings → Subscription → Payment details. Individual billing is managed only in the web app, not the browser extension or mobile apps. Your invoices are under Billing history.
How much is Bitwarden Premium?
At the time of writing (October 2026), Premium individual is listed at US$19.80/year and Families at US$47.88/year for up to six users, both billed annually and excluding tax. Prices vary by region, so confirm the current total on Bitwarden's official pricing page before you pay.
Why was my card declined at Bitwarden checkout?
Common causes are insufficient balance for the annual charge plus tax, a billing address or postal code that does not match your card, an incomplete 3-D Secure step, or browser extension interference. Confirm your details and retry; if it persists, contact Coinepay support.
Will I get a refund if I cancel Bitwarden Premium?
